After getting past a stubborn Wentworth team in the opening round of the Class 1, District 14 tennis tournament, the Richmond Spartans were stopped in the semifinals by the No. 2 seed, and tournament hosts, Excelsior Springs Tigers, 0-5.
The Spartans end the season 5-4 with the district individual and doubles tournament remaining for Saturday.
Richmond hosted Wentworth at Maurice Roberts Park in the tournament opener Monday. Coach Julie Baker said it was a new challenge for her team.
“We played well against a scrappy team,” she said. “This was the first time we played two of three sets and the second time we’ve played in any kind of heat.”
The Spartans won all five matches in straight sets. Jeremy Chrisman started with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Anaya Guillermo, followed by Jesse Bulk defeating Peyton Hart by the same score.
Parker Johnson stopped Joseph Johnston by identical 6-2 scores.
Chad Truby defeated Baocheng Chen 6-3, 6-4 and Collin Williamson was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Hao Li to end the match.
Chase Shipley battled Fan Jia into a tiebreaker in the first set with a 7-3 victory earning a 7-6 decision and was leading 3-0 when the match was clinched. The only doubles match was also stopped with Chrisman and Bulk leading Guillermo and Hart 6-3 after the first set.
