The Richmond Youth Wrestlers sent eight to the state tournament in St. Louis last weekend and half of them came home with medals. Derek Gardner and Dom Nobile both advanced to the finals, with Gardner capturing first place in his bracket, while Nobile placed second.
Gardner won both of his matches by falls in the 14 and younger bracket at 285 pounds. He won by fall in 1:13 and 1:08 on the way to taking first place.
Nobile was a runner-up in the 14 and younger age group at 120. Nobile won by fall in 1:21, followed by an 11-1 major decision and a 15-0 technical fall victory to make the finals. In the championship round, he lost a tough 5-3 decision to take second place for the tournament.
Jimmy McFall and Gaven Oldham finished in third place for Richmond. McFall took third at 105 pounds in the 12 and younger bracket by winning his first two matches by falls in 2:09 and 2:14. He dropped a 3-1 decision in the semifinals, but came back with a 4-2 decision and won the third-place match 3-1.
