With Jimmy Hamm and Dakota Hayward shutting down the Carrollton bats, the Richmond Spartans snapped a four-game skid and avenged its only MRVC East loss of the season Thursday afternoon at Southview Field.
The two Spartan seniors combined to hold Carrollton to a half dozen hits, while the Richmond bats came alive late to record a 6-0 win over the Trojans. Richmond improves to 3-1 in the conference and 4-5 overall. Carrollton falls to 2-1 in league play and 2-4 overall.
Hamm worked the first six innings and scattered the six Carrollton hits. Mark Hundley led the Trojan batters with a double and a single. Hamm struck out 7 and didn’t walk a batter. Hayward pitched the final inning and retired the side on three straight ground balls to the shortstop.
Hamm scored the only run Richmond would need in the bottom of the first when he reached on an error to lead off inning. He scored an unearned run after the Trojans committed a pair of fielding errors. Richmond added an insurance run in the fifth after Matt Stafford singled and stole second. He scored following an outfield error and an infield error on Carrollton.
