The Spartan golf team began a busy week with its first 18-hole tournament of the season and then followed with another MRVC East win on the road Tuesday afternoon.
Richmond held its own against some larger schools at Monday’s Smith-Cotton Tournament held at the Sedalia Country Club. The Spartans shot a 343 to finish 15th in the 20-team field.
Park Hill South had the low team total with 286, which was 6 shots ahead of runner-up Columbia Rock Bridge. Pembroke Hill finished third with 302, while Lee’s Summit North with 308 and Warrensburg with 319 rounded out the top five.
Spartan coach Murray Dennis was pleased with his team in its first 18-hole test. Newcomer Philip Kincaid had the low Spartan round with a 77, which was 3 shots ahead of Zach Frederick. Reece Milligan carded an 87.
“I was really pleased with how Philip and Zach played,” Dennis said. “Both shot their best rounds of the year so far, more to the level of their capabilities. Reece played OK, but I know he is not very happy with his scores right now. He is working really hard at getting his game on a more consistent level that’s he’s used to and I know we’ll get it figured out.”
