Harry J. Siegel, 92, formerly of Excelsior Springs, died Friday March 29, 2013 at the Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.
Harry was born Jan. 23, 1921 in Excelsior Springs, to Joseph M. and Ora M. (Hightower) Siegel. He married Jean F. Summers of Excelsior Springs June 28, 1946. She preceded him in death June 9, 1976.
Harry was an assembler for the General Motors Fairfax Plant for 30 years, before retiring in 1973. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union. He served with honors as a B-24 Flight Engineer during World War II in the Pacific Campaign where he flew 40 missions over Japan and the Philippines and won the Distinguished Flying Cross. We was reactivated and served in England during the Korean War as the maintenance crew supervisor for a B-50 bomber. He was a member of the Excelsior Springs VFW post. He was a member of the Excelsior Springs First Baptist Church. He had lived in the Excelsior Springs area most of his life.
Survivors include; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry L. and Janice E. Siegel of Lake Winnebago, Randy L. and Donna D. Siegel of Independence, one daughter and son-in-law, Karen K. and Perry G. Vandiver of Richmond. Six grandchildren and their spouses, Scott Siegel, Shaun and Erin Siegel, Christopher and Elaina Siegel, Tracy and Patrick Pierson, Mendy Murphy, Amy and Michael Best. Twelve great-grandchildren also survive.
In addition to his parents and wife, Harry was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Siegel and Frances Mills.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Siegel Cemetery c/o Thurman Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 2, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial with military honors will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs.
