In the midst of mounds of snow, thoughts of baseball dominated Monday’s Richmond Park Board meeting.
The board unanimously approved improvements to Southview Park ball field used by the boys’ high school baseball team. If the weather cooperates, the first home game is scheduled for March 19. Richmond was also awarded to host baseball district playoffs in early May.
In less than a two-week window, improvements are planned for upgrading dugouts and new fencing on the sides of the field.
City Parks Superintendent Terry Dickey said he received a bid of $4,300 from Chris Stockton to make the dugouts equal in length – a 2012 compliance mandate by Missouri State High School Activities Association – along with adding safety features. Four-foot-high block walls will surround the dugouts. Netting will be added above the wall to lessen the chances of players getting hit by foul balls. Currently, dugouts have a four-foot fence with no netting.
“They need that badly,” said Joyce Bowles, board vice president.
