Two Spartan wrestlers will continue their seasons this weekend at the MSHSAA championships after surviving district competition. Juniors Brock Stokes and Kaleb Heber both finished in the top four at this weekend’s Class 3, District 3 tournament held at Lathrop High School.
Both will also be making their first appearance at the state tournament that will be held Thursday through Saturday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
Heber, now 26-22, won his third-place match at 220 pounds by injury default against O’Hara’s Robert Martin. After drawing a first-round bye, Heber won his quarterfinal match 6-0 over John Campbell of Lone Jack. He lost in the semifinals by an 8-1 decision to Wiley Martin of Polo, but came back to edge Michael Barnett of West Platte 5-4 in the consolation semifinal to advance to the third-place match.
Stokes took fourth place in a very tough 160-pound weight class. He drew a bye in the first round and then won by fall over Cody Anderson of Lawson in 25 seconds. Stokes met Jacob Hicks of Polo in the semifinals. Hicks, a 44-match winner, defeated Stokes 10-4, sending the Spartan to the consolation semifinals. Stokes then took an 11-2 major decision over Carrollton’s Keagan Eiserer to advance to the third-place match where he met Spencer Matthews of O’Hara. Matthews then defeated Stokes 5-2.
