Michael Scott James Dorton, 21, the Richmond man charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action against his mother, was extradited to Ray County Jail Monday on a $750,000 cash-only bond.
Ray County prosecutors charged Dorton after he allegedly struck his mother in the skull with a blunt-force object with intention to kill.
Dorton contacted 911 and told police he was uncertain what caused his mother’s injuries. He later fled in the family car to Johnson County, Kan. A statewide alert was issued to locate him, according to Richmond Police Chief Chad Burnine. Through Facebook, police discovered Dorton played guitar in a band, which had a club show scheduled Jan. 17 in Merriam, Kan. Authorities apprehended him there.
Dorton’s mother, Stephanie Ann Bryant, 39, of Richmond was found covered in blood by police from an open head wound around 5:44 p.m. Jan. 15, according to the probable-cause statement.
