As he walked off the court Saturday afternoon, Orrick Coach Mitch Comstock said, “we gave ‘em a run.” The Lady Bearcats had just battled state-ranked Wellington-Napoleon down to the final seconds before falling 40-38 in the Class 1, District 13 championship game at Braymer High School.
Although the Orrick season ends at 13-13, the Lady Bearcats made Wellington-Napoleon, now 25-3 and ranked No. 4, work to earn its way to Tuesday’s scheduled sectional meeting with North Andrew.
“I am very proud of the girls’ effort,” Comstock said. “Without a doubt, they left everything on the floor. We just came up 2 points short. I thought Shaina Cook and Sam Fulte played terrific defense all day. They held Wellington’s top scorer to one field goal. As a team, we played very good defense. We allowed them too many offensive rebounds which was the difference, but our defense was very good.”
Wellington grabbed 33 rebounds for the game – 13 if those coming off the offensive glass.
It was Orrick’s third loss this season to the Lady Tigers. The other two meetings were also close as Wellington won by 10 points and 7 points.
The Lady Bearcats scratched and clawed their way back throughout the afternoon Saturday as they trailed by as much as 12 points in the second quarter. Wellington held a 7-point lead with 30 seconds left in the game, but Orrick would not go away.
