The Orrick Lady Bearcats pulled off an upset in the semifinals of the Class 1, District 13 tournament Wednesday night to advance to the championship game Friday night. The No. 3 seeded Lady Bearcats will meet top seeded Wellington-Napoleon at 6 p.m. Friday, following their 64-57 win over the No. 2 seed Polo.
The No. 3-ranked Lady Tigers (24-3) defeated Hardin-Central 69-35 in the other semifinal.
The Lady Bearcats, now 13-12, got 25 points from Madison Winters and 23 more from Sam Fulte to spark the offense, while the defense kept the top two Polo offensive threats in check. Orrick Coach Mitch Comstock said it was a complete team victory.
“I couldn’t have been more proud of how the girls played,” he said. “Maddy (Winters) and Sam had tremendous offensive games, but it took everyone. Our two post players did a great job on Sammy Copeland. She had 18 points, but Maddy (Endsley) and Sydnee (McGlothlin) wore her out in the process.”
Comstock also pointed out the defensive efforts of Makayla Easley, Shaina Cook and Marisa Swartz.
Winters connected on all four of her 3-point attempts, in addition to hitting the boards to pull down 8 rebounds – 7 of those on defense. Fulte was 10 of 16 from the field and 3 for 3 from the free throw line.
Orrick shot 41 percent from the field, and converted 11 of 18 from the stripe.
