The Richmond Lady Spartans had the Lady Eagles on the ropes Thursday night in their MRVC East meeting at Holden. However, the league-leading Eagles were able to hold off Richmond to pick up their fourth conference win in as many tries with a 43-37 victory.
Holden hit 12 of 16 free throws in the final 8 minutes to seal the win and send the Lady Spartans home with a 2-4 record in the MRVC East and a 7-12 overall showing. Both teams were tied at 25-all entering the fourth period and the game was tied again with approximately 2 minutes remaining before Holden jumped on top by 5 points. The Eagles then hit their free throws down the stretch as Richmond sent them to the line.
Three Lady Eagles scored in double figures with Sarah McAninch hitting for a game-high 14 points as she hit all six free throw attempts in the closing quarter and all seven attempts for the game. Haleigh Wood added 13, with Taylor Anderson chipping in 12.
Richmond Coach David Littrell was proud of the way his team answered after a disappointing game Monday at Carrollton. He also praised his defense, which held Holden to 13 first-half points.
