West holds the edge at MRVC Tourney

RHS finishes in 10th

The West dominated the MRVC wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Richmond High School gym. The schools from the MRVC West captured the top five spots with Oak Grove out-dueling rival Odessa for the team title, 385.5-366. Excelsior Springs ended the tournament with 327.5 to edge Pleasant Hill by 4 points for third place.

Holden was the top East school with its sixth-place total of 248.5 while Grain Valley took fifth with 264.5. Carrollton placed seventh with 219.5, followed by Harrisonville (208), Higginsville (142), Richmond (119) and Lexington (68).

Kaleb Heber had the top individual showing for the Spartans as he took third place in the 220-pound bracket. Heber won three out of his four contested matches in the pool. He opened with a bye and defeated Mark Ingraham of Excelsior Springs 8-2 before losing by fall to Grain Valley’s Dylan Wolfe. Heber came back to win his final two pool matches by fall in 48 seconds over Holden’s Ryan Stout and another fall in 1:53 over Brock Detherow of Carrollton.

In the semifinals, the Spartan junior lost by fall in 46 seconds to top-seeded and undefeated Derek Morgan of Knob Noster, but came back to win the third-place match by fall in 3:57 over Dalton Koch of Odessa. Heber is now 18-15 for the year.
