Prosecutors charged a Richmond man Jan. 17 with first-degree assault and armed criminal action after he allegedly struck his mother in the skull with a blunt-force object with intention to kill.
Michael Scott James Dorton, 21, has been detained on a $750,000 cash-only bond at Johnson County (Kan.) Jail. Dorton is awaiting an appearance in a Kansas court to waive extradition to Missouri.
Richmond Police, along with Richmond Fire and Ray County Ambulance personnel, found Dorton’s mother, Stephanie Ann Bryant, 39, of Richmond covered in blood from an open head wound around 5:44 p.m. Jan. 15, according to the probable-cause statement. She was taken to Ray County Memorial Hospital, where an emergency room doctor told police Bryant suffered a depressed skull fracture from the top of her head down the to the orbital bone near the right eye.
