One of the best offensive nights of the season by the Carrollton Lady Trojans was one of the worst nights for the visiting Richmond Lady Spartans Monday night. Carrollton racked up its second highest scoring total of the night as the Lady Trojans handled Richmond 58-39.
It was Carrollton’s third win overall in 15 games, while also improving to 2-2 in the MRVC East while Richmond slipped to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in conference.
The Lady Trojans’ offense received a big boost at the free throw line. Carrollton connected on 22 of 34 free throws as the Lady Spartans lost three starters to fouls. In addition, Richmond went to the line 25 times and hit just 11. The Lady Spartans also struggled shooting from the field.
“It is pretty simple, very few teams win contests shooting 16 percent from the field,” Richmond Coach David Littrell said. “Overall this season we have done a solid job of sticking to our game plan, except for tonight. We didn’t adjust on defense to get into position first. We committed too many fouls, which they converted into easy points. Plus we played very impatient on the offensive end of the court.”
Caitlin Ehlert hit 8 of her 10 free throws for the night to help her end up with a game-high 18 points to lead Carrollton. Hunter Summers added 17 points.
There was an early indication to the night when Carrollton jumped out to a 7-0 lead and were in the bonus with 1:53 remaining in the opening period.
