Some clutch free throw shooting, especially in the fourth quarter, helped the Orrick Lady Bearcats get the I-70 Conference matchups started on a winning note Tuesday night in Concordia.
Orrick converted 7 of 10 free throws in the final period to hold off St. Paul Lutheran 54-50 in the league opener for both schools. The Lady Bearcats improved to 6-10 overall. Both teams entered the final 8 minutes tied 28-all, but Orrick had its best scoring quarter of the night thanks to its performance from the line.
Madison Winters paced the Lady Bearcats with a game-high 24 points as she hit 9 of her 12 field goals including 2 of 3 attempts outside the arc. She also converted 4 of 5 free throws.
Shaina Cook had only 4 points, but they all came in the fourth quarter as she made all of her free throw attempts.
Orrick Coach Mitch Comstock called it a great team win.
“Madison Winters had a great night and we also did a great job from the free throw line in the fourth quarter,” He said. Cook hit four big free throws that helped seal the game.”
