Four quarters wasn’t enough for the Richmond Lady Spartans in their MRVC East road opener Monday night at Knob Noster. The Lady Spartans and Panthers battled through overtime before the Panthers held off Richmond 35-34. The loss drops Richmond to 1-1 against league competition and 2-5 overall, while the Lady Panthers picked up their first win in three contests overall.
“Great game atmosphere, but not the outcome we wanted from our first conference road trip,” Lady Spartan Coach David Littrell said. “We have to do a better job of executing the fundamentals of the game to come out on top in contests such as tonight.”
The game was tied 30-30 at the end of regulation. Richmond managed a field goal by Cassidy Layman and Mallory Cole hit 2 of 4 free throws in the overtime, while Knob Noster got a field goal from Bri Gibbs, while Kelsey Beasley hit one of 2 free throws and a field goal in the extra session.
Miya O’Dell led the Richmond scoring with 12 points, with Emma Long hitting for 7 and Layman adding 6. Mallory Cole had 4 points, with Leslyn Cole and Jenny Simpson each chipping in 2. Gibbs, Beasley, Holly Chabotte and Rachel Palomo all led the Lady Panthers with 6 points apiece.
Each team scored 8 points in the first period, and Richmond held an 11-7 edge in the second frame to hold a 19-15 lead at the intermission.
