Richmond had two runners finish in the top three Saturday to help the Spartans to a second-place showing in the Class 2, District 8 cross country meet and a third straight trip to the state meet this weekend. Junior Matt Tweedie led the field for Richmond by edging Plattsburg senior Trevor Jones for the individual district championship. Tweedie covered the 5K course at a cold Platte Ridge Park in 17 minutes, 38.5 seconds.
The Spartans just missed having a one-two finish as Jones nipped Richmond senior Justin Persell at the tape for second place. Jones crossed the line in 17:42.4, with Persell only .3 seconds behind.
The Spartans had two runners place in the top 20 and ended the run with 50 points. Hamilton-Penney was crowned team champions with 40 points with four runners in the top 15. Lawson grabbed third spot – just 3 points behind the Spartans.
Wyatt Bulk placed 16th for the Spartans. The sophomore crossed the line in 19:02.8, with senior Jesse Bulk three spots behind with his time of 19:23.8. Roy Branson turned in the 24th-place time of 19:45, with his senior teammate Daniel Dehn only 2.9 seconds behind.
