For a team featuring one senior, a sophomore and three freshmen, the Lady Spartan golf team handled the pressure of – for most of them – its first post-season test with flying colors.
With all five golfers placing high enough to earn all-district honors, Richmond placed second at the Class 1, District 7 and will move on to the sectional tournament Monday at the Mozingo Golf Course in Maryville.
The Lady Spartans shot a 404 to finish as runner-up, with Smithville winning the district team title with 387. The top two teams and low 15 individual scores not on the qualifying teams advance to sectionals.
Sophomore Breann Mathis, a sectional qualifier last fall, finished just one shot behind Smithville’s Paige Imhoff for the individual district title. After shooting a 48 on the front nine at Shirkey Golf Course, Mathis came back with a 42 on the back for a 90, with Imhoff carding a 46-43 (89) to win the title.
Senior Zoe Harper finished the day with a 52-58 (110) to place in a tie for 15th. Richmond Coach Murray Dennis said it was the district experience of Harper and Mathis that helped the three freshmen prepare for their first post-season tournament.
“Zoe and Breann really helped out our freshman because both of them had district experience,” he said. “I thought our girls did a great job of that Monday.”
