Competing against larger schools Saturday, the Richmond cross country team ended up 14th at the Kearney Invitational held at Jesse James Park. The Spartans ended the day with 362 points, with Warrensburg scoring 44 points to take the team title over Rockhurst with 103 and Kearney with 128. There were 22 teams in Saturday’s race.
Justin Persell had the top Spartan finish with his time of 17 minutes, 26.3 seconds good for 20th. Ty Hughes of Lee’s Summit North broke the tape in 16:18.2 to take first.
Matthew Tweedie covered the 5K course in 17:50 to finish in 34th. Also for Richmond, Wyatt Bulk finished 100th in 19:10; Daniel Dehn was 116th in 19:31; Roy Branson was 126th in 19:49; and Luke Rumbaugh was 143rd in 20:32.
Mary Beth Bailey was the lone Lady Spartan entered in the girls’ varsity race. The Richmond junior placed 31st in 21:16. Smithville’s Katie Tuck had the winning time of 10:03.
