Doris “LaVerne” Ellerbeck, 84, died on Oct. 2, 2012, at home after a lengthy illness surrounded by her family.
LaVerne was born Nov. 16, 1927 in Ray County, to Lawrence Wright Endsley and Galena Opal (Moffitt) Endsley.
On Dec. 29, 1946, LaVerne married Ben Ellerbeck. They cherished each other’s companionship for 64½ years. Ben preceded her in death Aug. 16, 2011. Ben and LaVerne enjoyed a long retirement. They loved to travel together, usually choosing less traveled roads. They owned a second home at the Lake of the Ozarks for many years. The family has fond memories of the times they spent together.
In earlier years, LaVerne cared for children during the day in her home and was an employee at the Richmond News for many years. She was a loving and kind mother to her three children and “adopted” family.
Ben and LaVerne lived in Richmond until moving to Raytown in 1995. She was a member of One Spirit United Methodist Church. Throughout her life, LaVerne was a faithful member of various churches. She devoted much of her time to activities supported by the church and helped with chili dinners at Richmond Ideal Industries.
Survivors include three daughters: Rita and Earl Murray, Connie and Tom Kleinbeck, and Audrey and Joe Smelser; grandchildren, great grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Endsley of Liberty; sister Judith Beasley of Lebanon, and many more “adopted” friends and family. Her parents and a brother, Norman Endsley, also preceded her in death.
Visitation was held at 10 a.m. with funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8 at Terrace Lake United Methodist Church, 4500 Red Bridge Road, Kansas City, Mo. Graveside services followed at 2 p.m. at Richmond Memory Gardens in Richmond.
