The Richmond Lady Spartan golfers capped off a good week Thursday with a third-place finish at the nine-team Chillicothe Invitational. Richmond shot 385 at the Green Hills Course, with Maryville’s total of 375 edging runner-up Moberly by a shot for the title.
Richmond Coach Murray Dennis said it was his team’s best tournament performance of the season.
“We were able to see how we match up with schools we’ll see in the post season,” he said. “Maryville beat us by 10, but I knew going in that Maryville is probably the team to beat later on, but I was pleased with our scores.”
Sophomore Breann Mathis carded a 90 (44-46) to place ninth for the top RHS finish of the day. Maddy Zeller, a freshman, was two strokes behind (47-47) to take 12th. Two other freshmen, Makenzi Turley shot 96 (46-50) to place 14th and Becca Westbrook ended the day with 105 (51-54) for a 21st-place finish. Zoe Harper had a 109 (55-54) and was 25th.
“Zoe is continuing to make some adjustments with her swing and get more consistent,” Dennis said. “I can’t say enough about how our very young squad is starting to play their best as we head into the post season.”
