The Orrick Bearcats were within seconds of spoiling Homecoming festivities for the Sweet Springs Greyhounds Friday night. The Bearcats held a 30-26 lead with less than 60 seconds remaining when Nathan Vogelsmeier returned an Orrick punt 90 yards for the touchdown as the Greyhounds pulled out a 34-30 victory.
Vogelsmeier’s return dropped Orrick to 0-5 for the season while Sweet Springs picked up its second win in as many weeks after starting 0-3.
Derrick Dennis, who ran the ball 37 times for 221 yards, got Orrick on the board first with a one-yard run with just over five minutes remaining in the opening period to begin the back-and-forth battle. The Greyhounds countered with a six-yard touchdown run by Jeffery Nelson to tie the game on their next possession. Jeffery Dierker then grabbed a 30-yard touchdown pass from Jeffery Hall less than two minutes later to boost the Sweet Springs lead to 12-6.
Dennis added his second one-yard touchdown run, and then added the two-point conversion for Orrick five minutes later for a 14-12 Bearcat lead. Orrick did not get to enjoy the lead for long, as Hall scored on a one-yard sneak with 1:38 remaining before halftime. Nelson’s run for two was good to give the Hounds a 20-12 lead.
