Richmond senior Justin Persell was among several Spartan runners turning in their top times of the season Tuesday afternoon to help the Spartans to a third-place showing at the Smithville Invitational.
West Platte won the team event with Holden grabbing second and Smithville third in the 17-school field.
Persell covered the 5K course at Smithville Lake in 17 minutes, 50 seconds, which was a season-best time. Spencer Hudson of West Platte had the top time of 16:29, while Holden’s Shawn Conrad was the runner-up, just 7 seconds off the pace, and Chris Sammons of Smithville placed third in 17:38.
Matt Tweedie also turned in his best time of the year with 18:22, which was good for 19th place.
