Lady Spartans earn split in league contests

The Lady Spartan softball team fought back twice Monday afternoon at Southview, but could not get over the hump in a tough 7-5, 9-inning loss to visiting Lexington. However, Richmond bounced back the following night to defeat Holden 8-4, also at Southview. The conference split improves the Lady Spartans’ MRVC East mark to 2-7, and 5-15 overall.

Richmond trailed Lexington 4-1 after three innings Monday, but came back to tie the game at 4-all in the bottom of the fifth.

Once again the Minutewomen took the lead with a run in the top of the sixth, only to have Richmond push across a run to tie the game in the home half of the seventh to send the game into extra frames. However, Lexington, now 6-1 in league and 11-6 overall, posted two runs in the top of the ninth and Richmond could not answer.

Richmond used an Ashley Williams double and a single by Courtney Williams, along with a pair of Lexington errors in a three-run fifth inning to tie the game. A double by Skyler Wrisinger and a two-out double by TeriAnna Mohler, who had three hits for the game, gave the visitors a one-run lead in the sixth.
