You and I are interested in words. I have always wondered why people who speak different languages seem to excel in different fields of knowledge. The Germans seemed to excel in engineering, the Asian Indians in pure mathematics, The French in literature, etc. I just read a quotation that I think goes a long way to explain this phenomenon.
The limits of my language
are the limits of my mind.
All I know is what I have words for.
I would say that a good reason for studying foreign languages is that it might help a person’s thought processes. On the other hand, Mark Twain once said that he knew a man who could speak 17 languages and couldn’t say anything sensible in any of them.
