The semifinalists in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program have been announced and a Richmond R-XVI student is among the approximately 16,000 selected.
Hannah Hillegas, a senior at Richmond High School, will be in competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. Almost 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing and more than half of those will win a National Merit Scholarship and earn the title of Merit Scholar.
The 17-year old Hillegas, daughter of Dale and Judy Hillegas, said she was excited when she was told of being named a semifinalist. The fact Hillegas is among those in contention for the scholarship comes as no surprise to her high school counselor, Courtney Swafford.
