Last year, it was the Richmond Spartans sweeping Hamilton to take a pair of tournament championships. On Saturday, the Hornets returned the favor by completing a two-game sweep of the Spartans – the latest a 63-50 victory to claim the Hamilton Invitational.
The Hornets stopped Richmond 59-43 in the title game of the Lawson Invitational last month.
On Saturday, the Hornets showed why they are undefeated and the top-ranked Class 2 team in the state. Hamilton used its balanced scoring and rebounding advantage throughout the evening to fight off any Spartan challenge. Just as they had in January’s meeting, Hamilton didn’t waste anytime in taking control of the game in front of a packed home gym.
The Hornets got two quick baskets and then built a 13-2 lead with less than 2 minutes remaining in the opening period. The Spartans battled back to cut the deficit to 5 points, 16-11, by the end of the quarter.
