Clayton Jones’ 19-footer at the buzzer helped Orrick open I-70 Conference play with a thrilling 48-47 victory over the visiting St. Paul Saints Tuesday night. The Bearcats built an early 12-point lead in the contest, but the Saints battled their way back and the rest of the night was on even terms.
Orrick trailed late in the game, when Luke Searcy, who ended the night with 12 points, hit a shot to pull the Bearcats to within a point with 17 seconds left to play. Orrick’s press forced a St. Paul turnover near halfcourt with Kalija Rogers coming up with a steal. Jones found Aaron Blyth in the corner, who then dished it back to Jones for the game winner.
“Sometimes luck plays into it, but you also have to sometimes create luck,” Orrick Coach Morgan Dickson said. “The kids never quit and I’m proud of the way they kept their composure. It was a great team win.”
The victory pushes Orrick to 7-6 overall and helped avenge a 22-point loss to the Saints in the I-70 Conference Tournament in the first week of the season.
