The Richmond Spartans pulled out the wrestling mats at the RHS gym for the first time this season in a double dual with Smithville and St. Joseph Lafayette. The Spartans began the home portion of the schedule short handed and surrendered a lot of points due to opens. Richmond ended up dropping both duals.
The Spartans gave up 24 points on opens, but still fell just one point shy in their first dual with Lafayette, 37-36. In the second dual, Richmond picked up just two wins in contested matches in a 57-18 loss to Smithville. Spartan Coach Ken Simmons said giving up a lot of points due to opens gives his squad a lot of problems in duals.
“We also have some young kids wrestling varsity and they are taking some lumps,” he added. “Once we get healthy and some more experience, the team scores will look better for us. Reny (Reis) continues to wrestle well as we moved him up to 171 and he beat an undefeated wrestler from Smithville.”
Reis defeated Christian Shelley of Smithville 6-3 in his 171-pound match after beginning the evening with a 6-2 decision over Lafayette’s Chayse Adams at 160.
Alex Luman recorded a fall for Richmond at 285 pounds that tied the Spartans’ match with Lafayette 36-36, but the Irish were awarded a point on criteria and the victory. Richmond won six of the eight contested matches, but Lafayette picked up four wins from opens.
Savannah Nobile got things started for the Spartans at 103 pounds when she won by fall over Jacob Jones in 2:32. Nobile won her match with Smithville by forfeit. Tyler McGaugh captured a pair of wins for Richmond at 112. He won by fall in 58 seconds over Lafayette’s Craig Renfrew, and then captured an 11-9 decision over Jimmy Migletz of Smithville. Lauren Peck lost both of her 119-pound matches by falls. She lost in 1:05 to Derek Bohnsack of Lafayette and in 3:10 to Smithville’s Jordan Bowman.
Derrick Davis also lost both of his matches at 130 by falls. He lost in 1:15 to Lafayette’s Cody Fellows and in 54 seconds to Ryan Gregalunas.
Caleb Scarborough won by forfeit at 140 against Lafayette, but lost by fall in 5:54 to Gunnar Smith of the Warriors. Scarborough also lost by a technical disqualification in 4:45 in a 140-pound exhibition match against Austin Hass of Lafayette.
Gabe Vandiver lost by fall in 1:24 at 145 with Lafayette’s Skylar Adams in his lone match of the night. Kane Southwick split his two 152-pound matches for the evening. He began with a 9-2 victory over Anthony Beardon of Lafayette and then fell to Austin Ellwein of Smithville 7-4.
Cody Bryant lost at 160 pounds to Matt Ray of Smithville by fall in 59 seconds in his lone varsity match of the night. Bryant won by fall in 51 seconds in a junior varsity match with Soloman Ramieriz of Lafayette at 152. Luman split his two matches at 285. After defeating Cameron Hutt by fall in just 25 seconds to tie the Lafayette match, Luman lost by fall in 2:24 to Smithville’s Mike Chastain.
Dean Thompson won both of his junior varsity matches by falls in the 285-pound class. He defeated Nate Langston of Lafayette in 1:51, and then stopped Smithville’s David Emery in 1:19. Mike Hart lost both of his 285-pound matches by falls to Spencer Riddle of Lafayette in 2:46, and to the Warriors’ Moe Mattli in 44 seconds. Matt Stafford lost by fall in a 145-pound JV match to Tevis Kuritz of the Irish in 1:41.
The Spartans will be at the 23-team Harrisonville Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
