Tori Kopp scored a game-high 16 points Saturday, thanks to hitting 11 of 18 free throws, to help push Concordia past Orrick 41-31 in the championship game of the I-70 Conference Tournament.
Concordia spent a good deal of its time Saturday at the free throw line as the Lady Orioles visited the stripe at Wellington-Napoleon High School 32 times, while converting 15 of them.
However, Orrick Coach Mitch Comstock said the main problem for his team was holding on to the ball.
“We had a rough game,” he said. “We turned the ball over way too many times. We have to improve in this area.”
Orrick attempted 15 free throws for the night and was good on 7 of them.
The Lady Bearcats, now 2-1, jumped out to a 10-5 lead after the first period and held a 17-11 edge at the half. Concordia began to chip away at the Orrick lead in the third quarter with a 9-5 scoring advantage, and then broke loose with 21 points in the final 8 minutes.
Kopp hit 6 of 8 free throws and her only 3-pointer of the night, while Laura Blankenship hit her only 3-pointer as she scored 6 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Amanda Rodenberg, who scored a team-high 13 points for Orrick, posted 7 of her total in the final frame.
Megan Swartz added 6 points for Orrick, followed by Amy Isenhour and Shelby Harth with 5 each, and Leslie LaFavor added 2.
The Lady Bearcats will hit the courts three times this week beginning Tuesday as they visit West Platte.
