Richmond’s game with St. Pius was 2 seconds too long. The Spartans led St. Pius the entire game until the closing seconds as the Warriors pulled out a 41-40 victory and third place at the Husker Classic at Higginsville Friday night.
The loss drops Richmond to 2-3 for the season with the first home game of the season scheduled for Thursday night against Smithville.
The Spartan offense struggled for the second night in a row with just one player, Cody Gorham, reaching double figures with 10. Gorham also grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds.
Richmond held a 12-6 lead after one period, 18-13 at the half, and 32-26 entering the final quarter, where the Warriors outscored the Spartans 15-8. De’Ron Jenkins added 9 points for Richmond, followed by Caleb Benhardt and Robert Brewer with 8 apiece, Blaine Broderick with 3 and Lucas Hook with 2.
The Spartans had a half-dozen 3-point buckets with Benhardt and Gorham hitting two each. Jenkins and Benhardt had 4 rebounds each, with Jenkins dishing out 5 assists, while Benhardt led in steals with 3.
Michael Kaufman led St. Pius with 18 points, including 9 in the final period.
Richmond attempted just 4 free throws for the night and missed all 4 attempts, while St. Pius converted 12 of 15 from the stripe.
