Although the Lady Spartan tennis team did not get anyone past Saturday’s District Tournament held at the Indian Foothills Park in Marshall, Richmond did have one of its better days in a few years.
Brittany Munson and Ariel Hoard both advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play, and the duo of Hanna Jones and Kaylie Root also got into the round of 16 as Richmond ended the afternoon with 8.5 points to finish ninth in the 12-team field.
MRVC power Grain Valley edged another outstanding program, Marshall, by 2 points to take the team championship 28-26.
Warrensburg grabbed third with 17.5 points, while Chillicothe placed fourth with 15.5.
In other team results, Higginsville was fifth with 14.5 points, followed by Excelsior Springs with 13.5 and Trenton with 9.5.
Lexington was eighth with 7, while Knob Noster and Carrollton earned 2 points each. Odessa was 12th.
Munson drew the No. 5 seed and advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight-set victory over Gabrielle Madigan of Carrollton 6-0, 6-2, but dropped a tough match in the next round to Excelsior Springs’ Rachelle Thomason, who was the fourth seed.
Hoard opened the day with a victory over Lexy Cockrell of Odessa. In the next round she battled the No. 6 seed, Meredith Brick of Chillicothe, but fell in two sets.
Jones, the lone senior on the team this season, paired with Root to win their first match in doubles competition in straight sets over Tracy/Williams of Trenton before being eliminated in the next round.
The Lady Spartans end their season with an 8-7 overall record, while going 4-4 in the MRVC East.
