Both Richmond Coach Murray Dennis and Orrick Coach Courtney Adams were pleased with the focus of their golfers at Monday’s district tournament at the Shirkey Golf Course. Dennis and Adams will be sending members of their teams to Sedalia and the Class 1 state tournament Oct. 19-20.
Two members of the Lady Spartans and one Lady Bearcat finished among the top 10 who will tee it up at the Sedalia Country Club in less than two weeks. Both Jordan Thoreson and Kadee McMillan shot 109 and will represent Richmond, while Orrick’s Kristee Harris also made the cut with a 115.
Thoreson started her round on the back 9 with a 52 and birdied the final hole to finish the front with a 57. McMillan also began on the back with a 53 and shot a 56 on the front.
“I was pleased with how we played,” Dennis said. “They struggled at times and could have very easily just let down. I was especially pleased with how they kept their focus and finished strong.”
Also for Richmond, Leslie Russell shot a 57-59 for a 116, with Zoe Harper going 72 and 76 for her 148. McMillan and Thoreson will be making their first state tournament appearance.
Meanwhile Adams also liked the way her state golfer battled.
“Kristee did a great job of staying focused by bringing her score back down to where she needed to be,” she said.
Harris carded a 63 over the first 9 holes, and cut it down to a 52 over the final 9 to make her first state tournament.
Alyssa Sands shot a 67-62 (129) for Orrick, followed by Bailey Schreier with 58-72 (130), Bailee Jeffries with 63-70 (133) and Kailyn Dowell with 77-78 (155).
Lawson’s Shelby Malott will be making her third trip to the state tournament after she finished the day with a 51-56 (107). Also for the Lady Cardinals, Amber Lewis shot a 131 (64-67), followed by Kylee Boyer with 138 (64-74) and Miranda Shultz with 186 (95-91).
As expected, six-time defending state champion Pembroke Hill cruised to the district team title with 359, which was 100 shots ahead of the runner-up Odessa. Pembroke Hill’s Mary Reed was the medalist with an 83 (40-43) with her teammate Evan Sterneck taking second with 86 (42-44).
