The Lady Spartan golf team picked a pair of the top teams in the Metro area to close out the 2009 regular season with on Wednesday. St. Teresa’s captured the triangular match played at the Shirkey Golf Course with a team total of 176, with Pembroke Hill, winners of six consecutive state titles, shooting 184.
Richmond ended the day with 231 and Lady Spartan Coach Murray Dennis was trying to get his girls to not worry about the competition.
“We were up against two pretty strong teams today, but what we’re looking for was to shoot our own games,” he said. “We wanted to compete against the course and focus on what we can do, not what the others were doing. We accomplished that to some extent and found we still have to work on being more consistent.”
Three of the four Richmond golfers shot under 60 for the afternoon with Leslie Russell carding the low round with 52, which was 2 shots ahead of Jordan Thoreson. Kadee McMillan followed with a 58, and Zoe Harper shot a 67.
With the district tournament slated to tee off Monday at Shirkey, Dennis said it’s time for his team to have their games ready to go.
“We are close, but still have that “consistency factor” to work on,” he said. “We have girls playing that are willing to get better and put in the hard work. They see the mistakes they are making and know what they need to work on.”
Dennis said a lot of the mistakes are coming from decision-making on the course.
Casey O’Flaherty and Madalyn Byrd, both of St. Teresa’s tied for the day’s medalist honors with a 3-over par 41. Mary Reed had the low Pembroke Hill round with 42.
