After opening the week with a loss at home to Higginsville on Monday, the Lady Spartan tennis team ended the week on a good note Thursday by blanking the Lady Trojans at Carrollton 9-0.
The victory boosted Richmond’s record to 2-4 in the MRVC East, and 6-5 overall while keeping Carrollton winless in five conference matches and six overall.
“We had a strong night from start to finish,” Richmond Coach Zach Danner said. “I am proud of the girls’ concentration and focus that they showed tonight. Carrollton is a young team, but they showed a lot of heart. They hustled and worked hard to keep the ball in play. We served well tonight and did an excellent job of setting the pace of the match.”
Brittany Munson opened singles play with an 8-3 victory over Gabrielle Madigan, followed by Hanna Jones winning at No. 2 over Rebecca Turner, 8-1. Kaylie Root defeated Ashley Hinken at No. 3, 8-0. Hannah Hillegas defeated Brandy Brock 8-3 at No. 4.
No. 5 singles Lissa Long was an 8-2 winner over McKayla Randolph, and Ariel Hoard wrapped up singles with an 8-1 victory over Shelby Silkwood.
In doubles play, Munson/Jones defeated Turner/Silkwood 8-0; Root/Hoard stopped Brock/Madigan at No. 2, and Hillegas/Long won over Hinken/Randolph by identical 8-1 finals.
In the lone junior varsity match, Morgan McCaughey made it a clean sweep for Richmond with a 6-3 victory over Jessica Hendrick.
