RHS brings back tennis bronze

Although they were facing bigger schools, the Richmond Lady Spartans held their own at the Excelsior Springs Invitational on Wednesday. Richmond finished sixth as a team, while earning a pair of third-place medals in singles play.
Brittany Munson earned her medal when she defeated Phipps of Excelsior Springs in the third-place match of No. 1 singles 8-5. Munson began the day with a 9-7 win over Juviera Navarro of William Chrisman, but lost in the next round to Amanda Capps of Savannah, 1-8. She recovered to defeat My Le of Winnetonka 8-4 to advance to the third-place match.
Kaylie Root was an 8-3 winner over Cameron’s Sarah Miller to earn her third-place medal. Root began her bracket with a 9-7 decision over Bethany Bayne of Chrisman. In the second round, Root fell to Mindy Anderson of Savannah 3-8 and then advanced to the third-place match when she stopped Megan Tran of Winnetonka 8-1.
Richmond had two doubles teams place seventh for the afternoon. Hannah Hillegas and Lissa Long defeated Kaylie Botts and Whitney Parks of Cameron 8-0 in the seventh-place match at No. 2. The No. 3 duo of Morgan McCaughey and Brielle Herrero won their seventh-place match by an 8-4 final over Kirby Stuedle and Destinee Mathews, also of Cameron.
