The Richmond Lady Spartan volleyball team dropped a pair of tough matches to begin the week.
On Monday, the Lady Spartans lost to the visiting Lawson Lady Cardinals in three games, and on Tuesday traveled to Lexington and lost their opening MRVC East match in two games.
Richmond fell to 2-5 overall as they dropped a 20-25 and 21-25 match to the Minutewomen.
“The girls played well against a very smooth Lexington team,” Richmond Coach Bailey Pierson said. “My girls made some mental errors that cost us points. We’re still working to improve the minor details that will help us win ballgames.”
Brittany Childers, Kassie Smith and Devvon Daily had 2 kills apiece for Richmond, with Stephanie May leading the way in assists with 17. Childers also added a team-high 4 digs to her nightly total.
The Richmond junior varsity picked up a victory in a three-game decision.
After dropping the first game 18-25, the Lady Spartans captured the final two games 25-14 and 25-21.
The Lady Cardinals and Lady Spartans battled through three games Monday night at the RHS gym with the visitors finally taking the victory.
Richmond captured the first game 25-11, but Lawson came back with a 25-18 win in the second game and held off the Lady Spartans 25-23 in the third game.
Pierson said it was a tough one to lose.
“We rallied in the third game to make it close, but we just couldn’t pull through with the win,” she said. “The girls did a great job of playing together as a team, but we made some small errors that allowed them to pull ahead.
I was very proud of their effort and I know if we see Lawson again, hopefully we’ll give them a run for their money.”
Childers and Mikayla Vanderpool had 2 kills each for Richmond, with May dishing out a team-high 24 assists, and Daily added 7. Vanessa Palier had 5 service aces for Richmond. At the net, Childers, Smith and Palier had one block apiece.
In the junior varsity match, Richmond fell in two games by 12-25 and 16-35. The “C” team also dropped a two-game match 21-25 and 13-25.
The Lady Spartans will host Higginsville Thursday night at the RHS gym.
