A good week of practice turned into another dominating performance by the Orrick Bearcats Friday night in their I-70 Conference contest at Santa Fe. The Bearcats showed no letdown from their Rumble on the River one week earlier as they put 40 points on the board in the opening 12 minutes on the way to a 52-0 win over the Chiefs.
Bearcat Coach Pat Richard said his team had its best week ever as they ran their winning streak to 33 games.
“We had our best week of practice so far this year and it showed on Friday,” he said. “I thought we played better fundamental football across the board. Our linemen on both sides of the ball had their best games. We tackled much better this week, and our blocking really improved.”
The blocking helped pave the way for Orrick to rumble 258 yards on the ground with Aaron Blyth leading the backs with 141 yards on just 7 carries. Clayton Jones carried one time for 19 yards and attempted just one pass for the evening – a 23-yard scoring strike to Turner Twyman.
“Aaron ran the ball exceptionally well and I thought Clayton and the other backs did a great job of carrying out their fakes,” Richard added. “We played much more physically this week and that has to continue to improve this week if we are going to slow down Windsor.”
The Orrick defense held the Chiefs to 46 rushing yards and 19 more through the air on a pair of completions.
It took just 48 seconds for Orrick get on the board as Blyth took the second play of the game 37 yards to the end zone and then ran the first of his five 2-point conversion runs. The Bearcat defense got the ball right back for the offense with a fumble recovery just 27 seconds later. Kalija Rogers cashed in the turnover with a 29-yard TD run on the next play. It was one of just two carries for the Bearcat as he ended the night with 34 yards on the ground.
Orrick quickly added three more scores before the first period was over. Jones found Twyman for a touchdown pass, followed by Blyth with a 25-yard scoring run. Logan Eubank’s only carry of the night resulted in a 30-yard touchdown run to wrap up the scoring in the opening period.
Blyth added his third touchdown of the night early in the third period with a 56-yard run, and Twyman capped the scoring for the night in the fourth quarter as he found the end zone following a 20-yard run.
Cam Griffin and Paul Miller recovered Chiefs fumbles for Orrick with Rogers and Blyth picking off one Santa Fe pass each. Larry Blair led the defenders with 15 tackles. Eubank was in on a dozen stops with Cam McGlothlin making 11 tackles.
