The Richmond cross country team continued its strong start Thursday with a fifth-place finish at the Platte County Invitational. The No. 5 placing by the Spartan varsity was the best finish in several years.
The Spartans ended the meet with 163 points, while Staley nabbed first place with 62 points, followed one point behind by Smithville. Platte County was third with 115, and Grain Valley was fourth in the 15-team event with 133 points.
The varsity was paced once again by sophomore Cody Gorham who ran a fourth-place time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds on the 5K course at Platte Ridge Park. Stephen Smith also turned his personal-best time of 18:28 to place 23rd, and Luke Bailey’s personal-best of 20:02 put him in 59th.
Henry Smith was timed in 19:48 to finish at No. 52. Other times for the Spartans included Zach Sanders with 21:35 (84th) and Dylan White with 21:49 (85th).
Savannah Nobile had the top finish for the Lady Spartan runners with a time of 23:42, which earned her a medal at No. 35. Deanna Barger finished her first varsity run of the season with a time of 24:37, which was good for 49th, while LaToya Johnson was 62nd with 25:55.
Five Spartan junior varsity runners set personal-best 5K times on Thursday, with Justin Persell earning the only medal with his time of 21:25, which put him in 35th-spot.
Also establishing personal-bests were T.J. Ramsey with 21:45 (45th); Cody Horton with 22:46 (65th); Daniel Bridges with 23:50 (87th) and Nathan Sickle with 26:00 (107th).
Damon Goodall was 47th for the Richmond JV with a time of 21:07, followed by Tyler Minnick with 21:57 for 47th and Ben Moses with 23:23 for 80th.
Nicole Palmer earned the lone Lady Spartan JV medal with her personal-best time of 27:33, which put her in 35th.
Natalie George set her best time with her 27:58, which placed her at No. 47, and Rian Souder ran a personal-best of 32:56 which was good for 82nd. Lauren Peck was one spot behind with a time of 33:20.
