It took a while for the Richmond bats to awaken, but when they did, the Lady Spartans rallied for their first conference victory of the season Thursday afternoon. Richmond scored 4 runs in the fifth and added 2 more in the sixth for a 6-1 MRVC East win over Holden. The Lady Spartans are now 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Adrian Tackett backed the 6-hit attack by surrendering just 5 hits and no earned runs to the Lady Eagles. The junior pitcher walked just one batter and struck out 2 as she faced 26 batters in her 7 innings pitched.
Holden cashed in a leadoff walk, a single and an error for its only run in the third inning. Richmond finally got on the board in the home half of the fifth as Tackett began the rally by reaching on an error. A Haley Padgett sacrifice moved courtesy runner Jennifer Waters to second ahead of walks to Ashley Williams and Kayla Hewitt. Stephanie Williams then followed with a 2 run double.
The Lady Spartans added some insurance runs in the next frame. Kelley Martens began the inning with a single, and with two outs, Ashley Williams and Hewitt drove in a run each with a single to push the Richmond lead to 6-1.
The junior varsity game ended in an 8-8 draw. The Lady Spartan JV had 5 hits in the game. Brett Goligoski drove in a pair of Richmond runs with a double, while Haley Bentley and Rachel Dehn drove in one run each.
