You have to go back a few years before you can find the Lady Spartan tennis team getting the season started with two straight victories. The 2009 version of the Richmond squad dominated visiting Cameron 8-1 Wednesday to get that 2-0 start and coach Zach Danner said it was one of the best team efforts his team has put forth in a while.
“The girls are starting to bond and help each other to improve,” he said. “(Hannah) Hillegas and (Kaylie) Root both battled in close matches and ended with impressive victories.”
Hillegas trailed her No. 4 singles match with Kaylie Botts 2-7 before coming back to earn a 9-7 victory. Root also recorded a 9-7 win over Amanda Walker by the same 9-7 score at No. 3 singles.
Brittany Munson began singles play with an 8-5 win over Brittany Assel, and Hanna Jones recorded an 8-1 decision at No. 2 over Susan Odonell. Sarah Miller picked up the lone Cameron victory of the afternoon with an 8-5 win over Ariel Hoard at No. 5 singles, but Morgan McCaughey finished off the singles for the Lady Spartans with an 8-1 win over Whitney Parks.
“It was a great all-around effort,” Danner said. “McCaughey got her first varsity win of the year, and did a great job playing up a position. Munson and Jones looked great from start to finish. Hoard gave another great effort in playing up a spot and playing a close match.”
Richmond swept the doubles with Munson/Jones earning an 8-2 decision over Assel/Walker at No. 1; Root/Hillegas stopped Odonell/Botts 8-3 at No. 2; and Hoard/McCaughey defeated Miller/Parks 8-2.
Richmond won two of the three junior varsity matches. Brielle Herrero defeated Marcy Weber 6-0 in singles and Anna Munson/Herrero defeated Stuedle/Weber 7-5.
