After a long absence, the summer Richmond Spartan tennis tournament returned on Saturday. The event was held at the newly refurbished courts at Maurice Roberts Park, and although he was hoping for a better turnout, Lady Spartan Coach Zach Danner thought it was a good start.
“We were small in numbers, and those who participated really wanted to play,” he said. “It was a good start for the first time. This is something we hope to continue and hopefully we can keep it growing.”
Danner also thanked Lisa’s Sharper Cuts and Dan Menke for their sponsorship and help in getting the tournament going.
Brittany Munson defeated Kaylie Root for the women’s singles title, and Carl Elliott was a winner over Farrell Rogers for the men’s championship.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Richmond High School Tennis program.
