Messer pleads guilty to forcible rape

An Orrick man has pleaded guilty to rape.
Tyler D. Messer, 23, will have a sentencing hearing on July 23 after his attorney requested a sentencing evaluation report from the court.
Messer was scheduled to go on trial in Carroll County Circuit Court yesterday, but instead entered the plea last Thursday.
Ray County Prosecutor Jim Thompson said a burglary charge is still pending against Messer. Thompson said that charge would be dropped if Messer does not withdraw his plea.
Messer could face a sentence of five years to life in prison.
Thompson said he met with the victim and her family last week. He said he is relieved the case did not have to go to trial.
“I hate putting a victim of a sex case through it,” Thompson said.
Orrick Police were called to the victim’s residence about 2:45 a.m. on July 7, 2008 according to a complaint filed by the Orrick Police. The report says that Messer broke into the home of the victim, who is Messer’s ex-girlfriend’s mother, and used a pillow to cover her face while he struck her.
Thompson said that DNA obtained from Messer matched DNA found at the crime scene.
