Biology may be the smallest ingredient in the making of a wonderful mother. Alan Bunn of Kansas City would agree.
His mother, Rita Bunn of rural Richmond, came into his life at age 13 as his step-mother, but Alan said he never considered her in those stark terms.
“I never really had a Mom around. She was in and out of the picture,” he said.
Alan’s dad, Bob, married Rita and their union created an instant yet permanent family with four children.
“You see, it takes someone with a big heart to go from having just one child to marrying my Dad, and then becoming a Mom to three additional children overnight,” he said. Rita is also the mother of his brother and sister, Jimmy Bunn and Debbie Cadwalader, along with her daughter Laura Long.
Alan’s touching and eloquent tribute to his mother Rita was selected as this year’s The Daily News Mother of the Year.
Rita was notified while she was visiting her late husband’s sisters in Louisiana. She was surprised about her son’s secret entry and astounded that she won.
“I can’t believe it!” she exclaimed with joy. “He’s a sweetie.”
Enjoy reading Alan’s essay along with 9 other excellent tributes from area residents who have great love and admiration for their mothers and women in their lives. Happy Mother’s Day.
