Joe Kaufman shot a consistent round of 79 Monday afternoon at the Shirkey Golf Course to take medalist honors at the Class 1, District 7 tournament. The Bearcat senior shot a 41 on the back 9 and finished with a 38 on the front for his 8-over par total and was one of three Bearcats to qualify for the state tournament.
It will be Kaufman’s fourth trip to the state tournament.
Kaufman edged Drew Gray of Mid Buchanan by a shot for the district title. Gray carded a 40 on the front and the back. Mid Buchanan won the team championship and a spot in the state tournament May 18-19 at the Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield.
The district championship team and the low 10 individuals not on that team qualify for the Class 1 tournament.
The Dragons shot 355 for the day, with Orrick taking second in the 10-team field with a 368. No other full squad had a score under 400.
In addition to Kaufman, the Bearcats will have two more making the trip to Springfield. Preston Karnes carded a 43-42 for an 85, while Kalija Rogers, both juniors, shot a 49-50 for 99 to make the state field.
Karnes is now a three-time state qualifier.
Also for Orrick, Matt Waters shot 105, with Eric Rodenberg shooting a 107.
Other state qualifiers from District 7 include: Bushman, Concordia with 94; Nierman, St.. Paul’s with 97; Gomez, Wentworth with 100; Wood, Gallatin with 101; Heimbaugh, Maysville with 102; Strong and Noland, Maysville, each with 103.
