The Spartan golfers did not have one of their best days at the Shirkey Golf Course Wednesday afternoon in their MRVC dual with Oak Grove. Richmond shot a season-high 194, but it was still enough to improve to 4-0 as they edged the visiting Panthers by 4 shots. Richmond Coach Murray Dennis said his team appeared to have problems maintaining their focus.
“This was our third competition in three days, but it comes down to remaining focused and just playing the course,” he said. “We’ll have a good day of practice today, work on our scoring shots and hope that it carries over to our match Friday.”
Blaine Broderick was the medalist again for the Spartans with a 40 on the par-36 front 9. Marc Day of Oak Grove was the runner-up for the afternoon with 45.
Broderick was the lone Spartan in the 40s, but coach Dennis believes his team has better rounds ahead of them.
“Hopefully, that will be our highest total,” he said. “I have confidence that the boys will bounce back, get their games re-focused and come back Friday and post a good score. I’m still pleased with our team’s ability to keep their composure and letting go of the previous shot. One shot doesn’t make a round, and right now they are doing a great job of focusing on their next shot.”
Ty Tweedie ended his round with 50 for Richmond, with Kane Southwick and Andrew Sherman each carding a 52, with Zach Mathis shooting 54.
The Richmond junior varsity shot 225 for the afternoon with Adam Hellman having the low round of 50. Dylan Wyse followed with a 57, while Morgan Richey shot 58, and Zach Smith, a 60. James Stanton shot 61.
Colton Stevenson had the low score for the three Oak Grove JV golfers with a 53.
The Spartans will host Excelsior Springs and Higginsville Friday afternoon at Shirkey.
