The Orrick Bearcats kept their team total below 200 for their second consecutive nine-hole match Monday afternoon as they swept a triangular at the Shirkey Golf Course. The Bearcats turned in a 197, as they easily recorded victories over St. Mary’s with 222, and Kansas City Lutheran with 239.
Orrick senior Joe Kaufman captured medalist honors by carding a 4-over par 40 on a windy day. Alex Edwards of St. Mary’s was the runner-up for the afternoon with a 43, and Preston Karnes shot a 45 for Orrick.
Although he had two of the top three finishers, Orrick Coach Sam Griffin feels they can still improve on their scores.
“Joe played well,” he said. “Both golfers feel they are not playing as well as they should.”
Kalija Rogers ended the afternoon with 55, with Eric Rodenberg shooting a 57. Matt Waters shot 65 at the No. 5 position.
Griffin added that the remainder of his varsity golfers are showing signs of improvement as well.
“Kalija and Eric continue to shave strokes off at each competition,” he said. “The rest of our kids seem to be improving for the most part as well.”
The Bearcat junior varsity edged St. Mary’s by a pair of shots, 259-261.
The Trojans’ Brian Erstad turned in the low JV score with 58, and Zach Nichols was just one shot back for Orrick’s low JV round. Tyler Kent shot 65 for the JV Bearcats, followed by Ian Pigg with 66, Derrick Harris with 69 and Jonathon Sumpter with 72.
Orrick had two other JV golfers participating with Devon Waters shooting 68 and Jordan Waters following with a 72.
