The Ray County Coalition continues its efforts to educate communities, parents and students about the devastating effects of underage drinking.
This Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m., a special fundraising “Gala” will be held at the Mellon’s Community Hall. It’s the red barn just east of Lawson on D Highway on the north side of the road.
Festivities begin with the Meet and Greet at 6 p.m. After a 6:30 p.m. catered dinner by Nadler’s of Wellington, a live auction will commence at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction throughout the evening.
“We have a signed football from the MU Tigers and a signed football by the 2008 Orrick State Champion Football Team too,” said Shannon Wollard, Ray County Coalition president. “We also have a radio-controlled truck and lots of great items to auction. One of those is a special painting by local artist Jeni Reynolds.”
Area youth are also involved in the fundraiser. Students from BADD (Bulldogs Against Drunk Driving – Hardin-Central), CADD (Cats Against Drunk Driving – Orrick), and CIA (Cardinals In Action – Stet) and a student from Richmond, Nicole Palmer, expressed their creativity by coming up with the ideas and making the decorations for the Gala. They will also do the decorating.
Nothing brings to home the tragedy of underage drinking and the terrific consequences like a speaker who has been on the receiving end of such a life-changing event. CeCe Carlson, of Orrick, and her daughter, Laura, were hit head on by a drunk driver several years ago near Orrick. The accident claimed the life of her daughter. CeCe is sharing her emotional experience with the community, in hopes of preventing other families from going through what she has.
The cost to attend the event is $25, which includes the dinner and also the dance that follows the live auction.
“This is for a good cause. We never know where our funding is coming from,” said Wollard. “This helps with our sustainability. We want to keep doing the programs we’ve been providing the county since 2001. We’ll also have our national award on display and wish to thank our volunteers. It’s all because of them.”
