The Richmond Spartans wasted little time in putting the Carrollton Trojans away in the Class 3, District 15 Tournament opener at the RHS gym Tuesday night. The Spartans thumped Carrollton 76-41 to set up their fourth meeting of the season with Higginsville in Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal.
Richmond, now 20-6, jumped out to a 12-2 lead 3:30 into the game and was never threatened as the Spartans defeated the Trojans for the third time this season and ends Carrollton’s year at 9-16. Once again, it was Richmond’s depth and quickness getting the best of Carrollton. Ten Spartans entered the scorebook with 29 points coming from the Richmond bench.
The Spartans, who knocked down 16 3-pointers against Carrollton in their last meeting two weeks ago, got a lot of transition buckets set up by another strong defensive effort Tuesday night. Blaine Broderick led the scoresheet for Richmond with 20 points as he connected on four baskets from outside the 3-point arc – five less than in the previous meeting with the Trojans. Kyle Carroll added two more treys, with Jacob Swope and Kyle Ash hitting one apiece.
After building their quick 12-2 lead, the Spartans continued to get easy buckets set up by the defense as they raced to leads of 20-7 and 26-10 entering the second quarter.
Carroll then knocked down the first Richmond 3-pointer of the night 28 seconds into the second period to keep the Spartan surge going. The Trojans made a slight run as they closed the gap to 14 points before Swope, Broderick and Carroll connected on 3-point buckets as Richmond closed out the half on a 17-4 run for a 48-21 lead at the break.
D’Andre Williams slashed his way inside during the third quarter to score 6 of his 10 points as Richmond continued to pull away as the Spartans outscored Carrollton 20-6 to set up the running clock in the final period.
Jon Vance, James Vance, Robert Brewer and Kyle Ash also provided the inside muscle for the Spartans. Jon Vance ended the night with 9 points and 6 rebounds, James Vance added 6 points with Brewer hitting a pair of field goals and pulling down a team-high 8 rebounds. Ash added 7 points, and also had 3 rebounds.
Also scoring for the Spartans were Swope with 7, Carroll with 6, Jordan Smith with 5 to go along with 5 rebounds, and Trey Folvarcik with 2.
Andrew Malloy led the Trojan scoresheet with 9 points, followed by Jason Mayden with 7.
