Coach Morgan Dickson was hoping to send his senior Bearcats out with a victory in their final home game Friday night, but the West Platte Bluejays spoiled the evening with a 52-48 victory.
The Bearcats were nursing a one-point lead heading into the final 8 minutes of the contest, when West Platte finished out strong with a 15-10 scoring advantage.
Dickson said his Bearcats put up a good fight as they fall to 7-17 heading into this evening's district tournament opener.
"We played hard all night, but just didn't get the breaks we needed," he said. "I'm proud of the way the kids competed and we played well enough to win if we just get that rebound, make that shot, or make that steal. We were that close against a quality opponent."
Clayton Jones led the Orrick scoring for the night with 15 points, while West Platte was paced by Ben Schlick with 15 points and Clayton Carlson with 14.
Each team opened the night with 15 first-quarter points, but West Platte controlled the second period to take a 33-24 lead at the half. Orrick battled back in the third period behind the scoring of Cameron McGlothlin and a defensive effort that held the Bluejays to just a pair of field goals.
McGlothlin hit for 7 of his 13 points in that quarter as Orrick outscored the visitors 14-4 to take a one-point lead into the final 8 minutes.
Dakota Harth was the third Bearcat to reach double figures Friday with 10 points, followed by Anthony Sevart, Eric Rodenberg, Justin Pierson, Preston Karnes and Nick Lafferty with 2 apiece.
Orrick connected on 5 of 7 free throws, with West Platte making 7 of 16 attempts from the line.
Senior Bearcats were Sevart, Rodenberg, Pierson, Joe Kaufman and Lafferty.
The Bearcats, the No. 5 seed, meets fourth-seeded St. Paul's in the first round of the Class 2, District 15 Tournament at Santa Fe this evening at 7.
